Made in Laterland
Editorial, Live recording & Highlight
An in-depth editorial explores the philosophy behind Made in Laterland.
A collaboration between Hong Kong composer Charles Kwong and local sound artist Jacklam Ho, the performance-based sound installation gives damaged, imperfect and unfinished musical instruments a second life, a unique purpose that challenges the concept of what normality is.
Housed in the gallery space as an installation exhibit, audiences may notice the past lives of the modified instruments, yet they are fulfilling a different function. While the revived instruments will form part of the sound installation through a synthesiser system as loudspeakers that playback records, Charles and Jacklam also created new compositions with the specific “defects” of these instruments, to highlight the unique quality of their “imperfect” sounds.
